Kearns was released from prison in late May 2008, Reed in late October 2008. Reed still was on probation when caught by a police dog while hiding in a cornfield Nov. 10.
A woman who lives in the 5000 block of County Road 15 in rural Byron called 911 early that morning. She said she was awakened by the sound of something breaking, then heard someone rustling through papers in an office upstairs. The lower level of the residence is used as a craft-marketplace business.
The woman said she could see a man in the office and went back to her bedroom to avoid being seen, and called police. She heard what sounded like a man running down the stairs.
